The World is Flat
Where is Haiti in comparison to the world?
Definitions:
Globalization 1.0 started in 1492 when Columbus set sail and lasted until about 1800. It was about countries and muscles.
Globalization 2.0 started in 1800 and lasted until 2000, interrupted by the two World Wars. This era was about multinational companies.
Globalization 3.0 started in 2000 and is continuing through this day. This third era is all about the world coming closer together, becoming something like a global village
I believe that Haiti is still in the 1.0 range. They are still developing within themselves but working with other countries to do so. Haiti is a brand new country but has had many set backs along the way. Between political issues and natural disasters facing them everyday they are building up themselves.

![Picture](/uploads/4/5/8/0/4580432/433243112.gif)
- Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger,
- Achieving universal primary education,
- Promoting gender equality and empowering women,
- Reducing child mortality rates,
- Improving maternal health,
- Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases,
- Ensuring environmental sustainability, and
- Developing a global partnership for development.
Above are the Millennial Development goals made up by the United Nations back in 2000.
Millennial Development goal and Haiti
1. Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger: There are still people in Haiti in extreme poverty. Due to natural disasters 400,000 people are still homeless as of Jan 2013.
2. Achieving universal primary education: Due to the 2010 earthquake education had to take the back burner for a while. However, emergency schools were able to be built. "In 2011, and 2012, 75 percent of the students attending the emergency learning centers passed their final examinations, leaving them well prepared to transition into permanent schools." (reliefweb.int)
3. Promoting gender equality and empowering women: This goal has in some places been accomplished but not in others. While women have equal rights to men, women are still oppressed in Haiti. Literacy rates in haiti is 53% with men at 55% and women on slightly below at 51%.
4. Reducing child mortality rates: Mortallity rates in Haiti have dropped over the years due to sanitation and hygiene awareness and medical discoveries. Below is a graph showing this decline.
5. Improving maternal health: Maternal health is on the rise. There are two graphs below. The graph on the left is number of women who die during pregnancy and childbirth (per 100,000 live births) The graph to the right is showing women who visited at least once, during pregnancy, by skilled health personnel for reasons related to pregnancy.
6. Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases:
7. Ensuring environmental sustainability
8. Developing a global partnership for development
