Brief History of Haiti
Haiti is part of an island now called Hispaniola. The area of land now called Haiti was given up from Spain in 1697. France soon came in and took over exporting coffee and sugar. However a lot of the natives refused to help or would run away. So the french brought in hundreds of thousands of slaves from Africa to work on the plantations. Eventually the natives died off leaving these slaves to become the inherited owners. In 1791 Haiti declared Emancipation and Independence from France, but did not receive independence until 1804 through lots of war. However, this independence did not come without a price tag. France sent them a bill of 150 million francs; which would convert to somewhere in the tens of billions today. It was later reduced to 90 million but Haiti managed t pay it off. Haiti has had to work it's way up. Despite political problems, natural disasters, and much more hardships Haiti is still here today.
